Safe Chargers for Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

S-Pen is included but the charger is not included! How odd cost-cutting measure. I heard that Samsung delivers chargers in some areas with the retail packaging but neither that very charger nor the bundled USB type C cable supports 45W charging.

The Galaxy S22 series has two tiers of fast charging. At 25W wired and 15W wireless, it is fast. S22 Ultra supports up to 45W wired for super fast charging. So theoretically any 25W wired charger from Samsung will give the result of fast charging. In reality, they do so. But there are reasons to write so much below! There are new things you need to learn to charge S22 Ultra.

Please recall that the ability to transfer power is not measured in wattage. But it is measured in amperage. The new Samsung 65watt and 45watt chargers use a higher voltage which lowers the amperage. Samsung is using USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) for their chargers (for the S series). I lack idea what Samsung uses for A series models since they ship with fast chargers but with USB A to USB C cables (USB-PD specification needs USB-C at the charger’s end). Technically if the wattage matches and we do not worry about incompatible fast charging standards then we can happily use a 15 to 25watt chargers from A series models (like I have A50s).

Yes, the charger that comes with Samsung Galaxy A50s works with Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and you will see it is actually “fast charging”. Also, almost any power bank from Samsung will be able to charge Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. But, is that safe? God knows! For such a costly handset, we need to know some theory before thinking of any cheaper option from a third party. As I have pointed out above, the fast charging specification probably does not match. The above text above is sufficient enough to start explaining to you USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) and PPS standards in the next paragraphs.

USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) and PPS Standard

The need for the USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) standard was for the peripheral devices to charge or get their power from USB ports contained in laptops, workstations, docking stations, displays, cars, aeroplanes etc without the need for an additional power brick. This will make using a printer clutter free. As you can understand, this standard will help us to use one cable for simultaneous data and power transfer. USB Power Delivery is now into its third revision, the standard is broken down into devices with slightly different capabilities. USB Power Delivery 3.0 extends the protocol to support helpful features like battery condition.

Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 met the standards of PPS, Programmable Power Supply (PPS) fast charging lets the devices charge more incrementally (Voltage and Current). So, when the battery is near 1%, the charging will be very fast and when the battery is near 100%, the charging will be slower.

Quick Charge 5 is the latest in Quick Charge standards and can theoretically charge smartphones up to 50% in just 5 minutes!

Is USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) useful for S22 Ultra? Charging with a 25watt charger from A series models will charge quite fast and except 0 to 100 within an hour. The new USB PD PPS protocol is an upcoming technology across devices and third-party charging products. So when we use a charger with this protocol that can provide enough power, we will get the same result. That means, we can rely on the chargers manufactured by any standard third party. The new USB Power Delivery Programmable Power Supply (USB PD PPS) standard supports configurable voltages, enabling more optimal charging.

Which Charger Can Be Safely Used for Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra?

Samsung’s 25Watt (PD) charger should not harm. But remember that fast charging itself is not healthy for the battery, maybe the device. All of the modern costly efforts are to eliminate the problems of fast charging. If you charge slowly either wirelessly or with a Samsung charger, technically should not face any damage.

The problem arises when you want fast and super fast charging. Samsung recommends its Super Fast Charging 2.0 45W travel adapter to quickly charge the S22 Ultra, and it’s hard to argue.

Samsung’s 25Watt charger and Samsung’s present 45watt charger take almost the same time to charge 100%. That is not only for the reason that Samsung’s present 45watt charger is programmatically slow (yet super fast) charging, people are reporting that it delivers 30watt at maximum. So, it appears to many that “45watt PD PPS chargers” presently do not worth the price (unless you test them).
