Child Photography instantly attracts attention more than a photo of a landscape or still life, shooting photos of children with spontaneous smile is rewarding. That is said, but this is tad hard than a candid photograph. So what? So it is very simple : we have to do many pictures of children because they are the ones that give more visibility to our work. Easy and painless.
Child Photography : The First Shooting
The first day of shooting of the child of your dear friend needs loads of enthusiasm but we think appropriate equipment unnecessary, suggested equipments are :
- Nikon D800 to Nikon D7000 upwards or Canon Equivalent models like 600D upwards (upwards is based on the size of the sensor)
- 50mm f 1.4 Lens
- One 24-70 zoom lens
- One 70-200 zoom lens
The list given, the cost might expense of the long-awaited floors in the house! Possibly all advanced users has at-least two lens among them. It is just a list to give an idea about the range. We need to plan the compositions we can do, we need choose the best and most neutral background for portraits, we need to set up the cameras for the wonderful golden light that surely will give us great shots. Two 16-gigabyte memory cards will suffice.

A nightmare can start with a child, who has decided to decline to be photographed and is crying, who just wants to hide under the arms of the mother and that you will never make that beautiful smile that can give visibility to your photos. The fact is certain: a child hates you and your expensive camera (lol). Set aside 50 mm for incompatibility with the subject but do not give up, the children are quite clever, they know crying is a thing that will deter the camera but cleverly shoot in bursts with the 70-200.
Keeping a distance, trying to disappear from view of the child, like hiding behind a tree can bring hope for some spontaneous behavior. Unfortunately children knows the hidden places better than you can think of. And the child’s hatred towards you will begin and will increase exponentially. Time will pass, the sun will go down taking away that beautiful golden light with which to fantasize superb shots. It is normal to end up with no photos, nothing material for the post-production, cards miserably empty, there are only so many questions about where we were wrong. You are doing the right. Else you’ll end with typical snapshots posted on Facebook where it is mandatory to give a Like – just because you know whose child it is!
Child Photography : Where We Go Wrong and How to Fix?
The answer is natural, we go wrong with improvising, we underestimated the little experience of Child Photography, the sin of pride. Children must be at their best to give you a smile while meeting you, they must believe their playmate. So what? So, before the next shooting we have to become children. Have fun choosing games and distractions that we take away those 25 years of too much maturity and awareness. Every things that we take away from the shelf which reminds us of our forgotten childhood, reminds us of flavors and aromas of summers spent on a lawn and snacks with bread and jam that. And rediscover soap bubbles … but how beautiful these soap bubbles are? Recall.
In the next shooting, the little girl you have chosen for her beautiful eyes will be looking curiously, her mother taught her the anxiety of the photo shooting. May be she hired a hairstylist, wants to make her pose as if a model for Vogue and as expected the baby is already thinking about her great carrier. You’ll become more closer than her mother at this moment.
Child Photography is not difficult if you can recall your habits, your moods, your likings and emulate them naturally. Recall that we hugely hated the peoples who used odd voice to befriend with us – they tried their best, but we really hated it.
