Now, officially it is possible to download the whole server image as usable image. Now, it is possible to expand the development more fast. Practically, before the official method was declared, with the unofficial method we could run our Rackspace Cloud Server Image on Local Computer as Virtual Appliance. For example, right now there might not be any multi-server OpenStack Heat Template for Nginx – WordPress combination. Now, for developmental purpose, if manually created instances are exported, it is easier for the others to make the developmental cycle faster.

Obviously, except tutorial and developmental stuffs, sharing own server’s VHD publicly will open the wider way to get hacked within few minutes. But this is really a great feature to see as official method :

There is screenshot in the updated first webpage, scroll down to check it. With new service levels and SLA, Rackspace is doing great faster than expected. For security reason obviously there are some limitations :

Obviously, it will become dangerous if this minimum border is not maintained. Couple of valid examples of usage can be :

  1. We are downloading our own server’s image, creating a dev setup and running the image on dev setup locally or just keeping it for safety of data in case of disaster or possible interruption of service to lower the billing (not for active websites)
  2. We are re-selling the RAW infrastructure as partner and providing our readers the tutorials and images to quickly setup own thing

With proper permission and agreement, it is actually possible for us, for example to resell the RAW Infrastructure which costs lesser to the end user. If you become a direct customer, you might need to pay $500 or more per month but if you consume the RAW Infrastructure, cost will go down to $150 – $200. The disadvantage is the lack of great support. But, you are getting the performance of Rackspace. Full closure of Unmanaged service has created the situation which Rackspace Cloud Sites had once – it was an excellent service once (we are not aware of current situation, we upgraded for greater flexibility; as a Managed aPaaS, Rackspace Cloud Sites is really great with no change in pricing since 2010).
