Intel continues the way of Software Defined Infrastructure and Cloud Automation, presenting a software for Performance Monitoring of the OpenStack nodes. Intel has expanded the pool of instruments that operate within the DCM – Data Center Manager suite, the Data Center Infrastructure Management solution proposed is part of the KVM Gateway of which we have already discussed in a previous publication. This time, to be released is a tool dedicated to the management and control of machines hosted on the open source cloud computing software OpenStack.

Ensuring Reliability For OpenStack Instance’s Performance Monitoring

The new component was baptized by Intel under the trade name, Service Assurance Administrator (SAA) and can be installed as an agent on each OpenStack node to check the performance through an index that expresses the number of instructions per second that the node is elaborating. The component also includes other features dedicated to the management of the computational capacity of the node and monitoring the security of the entire OpenStack environment.

The sales policy of the component will follow the philosophy of all the other tools associated with DCM suite, so that the users can buy the new tool from Intel itself, either through a network of partners, both from third party vendors, at a cost of about $ 200 per server per year.

Intel has helped and supported OpenStack since its inception, participating directly in the drafting of the code of open source cloud, had promised that it would release the code developed for SAA component to the OpenStack community. This promise, however, has never been maintained and according to rumors go, that the publication of the code would be made difficult by the ability to access the depths of the components. The acquisition of these skills by unauthorized personnel could create problems of intellectual property and, indeed, serious security problems for users of Intel processors. The new component Intel works perfectly OpenStack ecosystem.

Despite this problem, the component SAA is a utility that works perfectly with OpenStack, as Intel itself is part of the ecosystem of OpenStack. The idea pursued by Intel with the release of this tool for OpenStack is to provide IT administrators with a way to verify that their cloud computing infrastructure functioning properly and according to the expectations. At this primary purpose there is also the desire to provide greater security in the use of the platform enterprise users, who are always reluctant to adopt OpenStack in production, especially as concerned about the security issues that could arise from an open source product.

With SAA, Intel offers a tool able to monitor the performance of each node OpenStack also in relation to contracts for the SLA, bringing the use of open source cloud computing platform to a much higher level and suitable for use in even the most demanding enterprise.

With the addition of the SAA, Intel continues to proceed at a fast pace in providing solutions for software defined that allow IT administrators to embrace the concepts of telemetry and control software of the underlying hardware levels, with levels of depth and abstraction increasingly important, thus ensuring the realization of data centers that respond to the most modern principles of automation.
