If you do not buy the receiver module, you need to buy VS1838B IR receiving head and create the receiver circuit yourself (which is not highly complex but impractical for small works). The module also has that VS1838B IR receiving head but ultimately the module has 3 pins – one is for 5V power, one is GND and the third one is for signal from Arduino. Setup is actually very easy. The module also separately sold which costs around $1. Cost of one VS1838B IR receiving head is just few cents.
