A good Multi-Functional Shield is really helpful for the advanced users. Multi-Functional Shields Has Multiple Sensors, Outputs Which Avoids Wiring. Here is an Overview of Arduino Multi-Functional Shield For Quick Prototyping. Also, as a result of mass production, it is a cost effective solution too. As these are Open Source Hardware, not all boards will have all the sensors. However, generally such Multi-Functional Shields can not be recommended for the beginners who are interested to learn electronics as it will add another layer of abstraction. These are commonly used in schools for children where need of learning circuit is a problem to teach or demonstrate basics for that age.

Different companies has a Multi-Functional Shield with different type of sensors. The shields commonly have :

  • Buzzer
  • Push buttons
  • 7 Segment LED display with dot after each digit and dots for clock
  • LED lights
  • Potentiometer
  • Temperature sensor (usually LM35)
  • Temperature and Humidity sensor (usually DHT 22)
  • Other sensors
  • Pins to connect separate modules like HC SR04 sonar module (sold separately)

There are libraries for Multi-Functional Shields. Commonly, the circuit diagram available as open source projects.

Creating Own Multi-Functional Shield

Arduino Multi-Functional Shield For Quick Prototyping

Obviously, one can buy the components like sensors and create own Multi-Functional Shield. That is costlier option but more practical as several common ICs, and basic electronic components can be added to the shield. As for basic building material, one may use Arduino prototyping shield or any prototyping board or daughterboard. Also it is possible to make it more compact with custom PCB fabrication and assembling service. As for “Library” of such Multi-Functional Shield, one can use any existing library as a scaffolding to start working. We already have a guide on how to write own libraries for Arduino. I personally prefer some sensors on such multi functional shields such as LDR, an LCD as display, ICs like for driving motors. A true Multi-Functional Shield will be with components which the user commonly uses. ‘The basic idea behind such shield is quite old 8051 development boards with lot of things on board.
